One Light - Lighting The Coel Coeth

כ"ו בכסלו תש"ע
Shamash 28

The Lesser Sabbat of the winter solstice (namely Yule, Geul, Giuli, Meán Geimhridh, Lá an Dreoilín, Modranicht, Alban Arthan, ...) in the northern hemisphere of the earth (my location) falls after sunset on the evening of December 21. This date is the seventh of Grael in the witches' calendar and the fifth of Tevet in the Jewish calendar; both dates fall within the month of the Elder Moon in the Celtic tree calendar.

On Yule and its connection to the magic circle of the witch, Mike Nichols writes:

"Ultimately, of course, the holiday is rooted deeply in the cycle of the year. It is the Winter Solstice that is being celebrated, seed-time of the year, the longest night and shortest day. It is the birthday of the new Sun King, the Son of God -- by whatever name you choose to call him. On this darkest of nights, the Goddess becomes the Great Mother and once again gives birth. And it makes perfect poetic sense that on the longest night of the winter, 'the dark night of our souls', there springs the new spark of hope, the Sacred Fire, the Light of the World, the Coel Coeth." At the Winter Solstice, the Circle is not yet a Circle; it is a Point. Specifically, it is the point at which spiritual energy manifests itself into the physical world. It is the divine spark, the sacred seed, the single cell, the incarnation, the universe in a mustard seed. In some ways, the Point is more inclusive than the Circle, since the Circle always implies a boundary, and a separation of that which is outside from that which is inside. The Point, however, can symbolize the All. At the Winter Solstice, we bless and purify this tiny dust-mote of Being, this Birth of the Circle, which is also All That Is. The Circle Is A Point.

Thus, Yule is the perfect sabbat in which to ground and from which to cast a magic circle in and with sacred time. Blessed be our circles this Yuletide, every one, with the amazing sacred power and joy of Yule -

- the Hebrew word for the redemption of humankind's collective consciousness is called Geulah (גאולה). The Germanic and Northern European words for Yule - Geul and Giuli - would be spelled in Hebrew גאול and גאולי. The Hebrew shoresh (three letter root) of all these words is גול (gule, yule) meaning rejoice! and express joy!

Have a blessed and deeply joyful Yuletide season! So mote it be! אמן

The Crystal Cave Of Hitbodedut

כ"ז כסלו תשס"ט
Shamash 28

When I was a child my parents frequently tried to coax me out of my bedroom where I was engaged in solitary play, reading, working with my microscope set or frequently, just thinking and being alone. They called my self-initiated retreat into my own space hibernation. I still hibernate to this day, whether at home or at the office. The drive to hibernate is integral to who I am, to my purpose in life and to my destiny. Importantly, I have naturally hibernated in my crystal cave of solitude (whether literally or thoughtfully) from my earliest memories of existence.

In light of this tendency toward cave-dwelling hibernation, linked from the dark depths to the Great Bear constellation and stars, the twenty-fifth shaman stone in my Temple collection corresponds to the spirit of Arth (the Welsh word for Bear), whose primal powers include hibernation, deep introspection, meditation (hitbodedut, self-seclusion), healthy vitality, reclaiming truth through unconventionality, attaining altered states of consciousness, astral travel and dreamworking. Arth is also associated with the winter solstice (the sabbat of Yule), bringing light from darkness (Chanukah), the North Star, the ancient stellar goddess, the throne of the queen of heaven, the realm of the crystal castle, the realm beyond time and the realm of causes. All of these associations link together through the idea that the great spirit of Arth is the great Crystal Cave spirit of crystal caves (which extend the field of apprehension), like in my poem The Magic Ladder.

As the shaman stone for Arth I've designated a natural peridot crystal specimen, a visionary stone whose shamanic qualities include protection, health, wealth, sleep, inner balance, peace and connection to destiny.

Stones From The Temple Of Joy

Wolf Spirit Moqui Shaman Stone

כ"ז אלול התשס"ח
Belz 29

Dating from around 3200 BCE, the Temple of Newgrange is an earth mound measuring 44 feet high. The megalithic boulders which surround the Temple each measure up to 8 feet high. In Celtic magic, in the mysticism of bringing light from darkness, there are 36 shaman stones of hidden mystery.

Dating during the second century BCE, the second Temple of Jerusalem was rededicated, marked in the current age with the 44 total lights (36 menorah plus the 8 shamash candles) of Chanukah. In Jewish kabbalah, in the mysticism of bringing light from darkness, there are 36 lamedvavniks of hidden mystery.

We can see then that in both Celtic and Jewish mysticism the numbers 44, 36 and 8 are directly connected to the hidden mysteries of the Temple and to bringing light from darkness.

Like my Celtic ancestors, to bring light from darkness, I am collecting a set of 36 sacred shaman stones from the earth, to be dedicated over 8 nights during the month of Shamash according to the Celtic witch's calendar.

Like my Jewish ancestors, to bring light from darkness, I will light 44 candles over the course of 8 nights, ritually dedicating each of the 36 shaman stones in the light of its corresponding candle (36 over 8 nights plus 8 shamash candles, one for each night) according to pattern of Chanukah.

This year, the first day of Chanukah is also the sabbat of Yule (the Celtic festival of light and the astrological winter solstice). Chanukah/Yule falls during the month of Shamash in the Celtic witch's calendar.

Like my Native American ancestors and in honor of the Land upon which I live, the first shaman stone dedicated to my Temple Collection of shaman stones is a moqui stone.

In Celtic magic, the first shaman stone corresponds to the wolf spirit. My wolf spirit stone will be marked in Ogham letters with the word gliondar meaning joy, with the Hebrew letters chet-gimel-sin-sin (the first letter of each of the four words for joy in Hebrew - chedvah, gilah, simchah, sason - where the letters taken as a phrase together - חג שש - mean "the circle of rejoicing"), and in English letters with the Welsh word gorfoleddu meaning rejoice, to be joyful.

Welcome to the world, my joyous circle of stones.

Path Of The Just

י'ד בכסלו תשס"ח
Shamash 16

Acting with the energy of the lights of Tohu, in vessels of Tikkun ... because I can.

This shabbat full moon esbat at 6:33 am, I woke up and wrote down the major symbols of a complex dream so I would remember them.

I saw two Hebrew letters clearly in the dream, a tzadi (צ) was somewhat hidden behind a zayin (ז). The zayin "stepped forward" toward clearer closer identification. In the dream, I said,

"I claim the zayin for now."

In other words, while both letters were "mine", I indicated the one acting "for now" was the letter zayin.

There was another hidden letter as well.

Each letter was associated in some manner with a different and specific aspect of a dandelion.

The zayin, the clearer letter visually, was associated with a yellow dandelion set in a mid-horizontal line on a white door. (This mid-horizontal line corresponds to the path of the letter aleph (א) located "between" Gevurah and Chesed on the Tree of the Sefirot. Zayin is the letter corresponding to the path between Chochmah and Tiferet on the Tree of Life in the GRA array.)

The tzadi was itself somewhat hidden somewhat revealed in the background of directed observation, "behind the zayin", and was associated with a somewhat hidden, somewhat revealed red-like dandelion set opposite the yellow dandelion - out of the line of direct visual sight, but well within the higher mind's eye. In other words, though I didn't see the red-like dandelion with my dream eyes, I saw it through my higher mind beyond the eye - and as the tzadi was "behind" the zayin, the red-like dandelion was "opposite" the yellow one. In my mind, this kind of "seeing yet not seeing" is some "in between" form of quasi-reverse vision. (Tzadi is the path between Netzach and Malchut on the Tree of the Sefirot in the GRA array.)

Beyond both the zayin and the tzadi, and beyond both the yellow and red-like dandelion, I perceived the presence of both another "hidden" letter and another "hidden kind" of dandelion. I did not see directly or indirectly either the hidden letter or the hidden dandelion, but I perceived the Presence, associating the hidden dandelion with, not a color or color-like aspect, but with the essence of the dandelion - a dandelion essence. (This essence corresponds to all the "other" empty yet not empty space between the distinct letter paths on the Tree of the Sefirot which gives form to all the distinct letter paths. It is the pure Divine Feminine no-man's land of the vacated space, the chalal hapanui. This is complete reverse or negative vision.)

As I was waking from the dream, I clearly heard a word pronounced like "sern", spelled in English either as "sern" (like the enterotoxin-like microbial gene studied in medical research laboratories) or "cern" (like the high-energy particle physics laboratory). Both Sern and Cern pertain to "states in between" - the former (sern) to a place "in between" being a distinct toxin "code" or being distinctly non-toxin "code", and the latter (cern) to quantum non-localized fuzzy states existing "in between" distinct places in space. Like klipat nogah, both "sern" and "cern" point to a tachash state of being.

When I woke up from the dream, I remembered clearly that someone had been messing with my instrumental music CDs in my office at work. One of my CDs called Wishes has a dandelion on it - I noticed it had been moved slightly when I went in to work yesterday morning and returned it to its place.

Taking all this together, this dream in triplets pertains to 3 kinds of perception:

direct vision (physical/nefesh and psychic-dream/ruach, color-tzeva)
quasi-reverse vision (indirect/neshamah, color-like light-aur)
reverse-negative vision (hidden yet .../chayah-yechidah, radiance-aur gadol/darkness)

Interestingly, this dream follows the initial act shabbat evening of naming time according to the Witches' Year in parallel with the Hebrew date. The first Witches' calendar date I used for posting entries is today Shamash 16, where Shamash has correspondences to dandelion, the color yellow, the sefirah Tiferet, Hebrew Shemesh and the Hebrew letter meaning "door" (dalet ד).

The path of the Just is a great shining light emerging from within darkness.

Aleph, Etzel & The Magic Chanukah Oil

כ" באלול תשס"ז

I dreamt.

It was medieval times. A small ship of young non-military soldiers was on its way to help those on land, but as the ship came nearer the land, it was met with military resistance sent out by some on shore. There was some sort of civil war occuring on land and these who had come to help the entire people were being fired upon. The ship had also been boarded - there was some hand-to-hand combat occuring as well.

The battle was ferocious and those in the ship knew their situation was critical. They would all die if they didn't have some help soon, very soon. A flare sent from one group of those on land was seen in the sky over the ship. One young soldier fighting for his life felt hope at seeing this flare. He thought help was on the way. Those on land knew they were here and were coming to help them, he was thinking.

I felt sick feeling this soldier's hope and seeing the hope in his eyes. I followed the thread of hope to see where it led.

It led to a powerful witch - the lover of the soldier's commander. She was a bad witch. The relationship between the commander and she was not healthy. It was obsessive in a bad way. She and he together were malignantly sociopathic, singularly focused on taking from one another without regard to any consequences. She didn't care about the impending doom shadowing over those under her lover's charge. She was entirely selfish, even with her lover. They both took from one another. And even though the energy generated between them was extremely powerful, it was misdirected. And somehow, that energy was the source for what was happening to the young soldiers on the ship. They would allow the soldiers to perish to satisfy themselves.

The witch had brought a gift for her lover - a vial containing a rare primordial one-of-a-kind magic oil. There was no other in existence like it. The witch had found it. She was bringing it to her lover in exchange for satisfaction. Now.

Despite that her lover had a responsibility to those soldiers on the ship. She was evil. And he was evil. Now.

I was sick. I'm not sure, but I may have momentarily penetrated into what I was observing, to hide the vial of oil from the two before before I woke up, so neither one of them could find it to use it.

I woke up.

This dream pertains to the event described in this post at DovBear by Jameel, Refusing Orders (see my comments to it also).

I am connected through my chotimah (aleph of emunah) to the 16 unarmed Jewish Etzel soldiers who died that day (as described in Refusing Orders).

The connection to "medieval" times is found in the gematria of aleph (with a value of 1000) X 16 (the number of unarmed soldiers who perished) = 1600.

The vial of magic primordial oil in my dream is the pure miracle oil of the Chanukah story.

Torah Of Peace, Deal With It

י"א באלול תשס"ז

Foxnews reports today that Greece is in flames and has been burning for two days.

ATHENS, Greece — Police on Saturday arrested and charged a man with arson and multiple counts of homicide in a deadly fire in southern Greece that left six people dead, the fire department said.

The 65-year-old man was arrested in connection with the fire in the southern Peloponnese town of Areopolis, department spokesman Nikos Diamandis said, where five people were burned to death on Friday and one firefighter died of a heart attack while battling the flames. The blaze is one of dozens that are burning across Greece and have killed a total of at least 46 people in the past two days.

The arrest followed the prime minister's declaration of a nationwide state of emergency.

Interestingly, two days ago, Sultan Knish suggested that Torah is extremist, so deal with it:

The Torah is an extremist work for extremist people. For people who actually care and are willing to fight for their beliefs. It has a lot for moderates to hate. It has a lot for them to distrust. Moderates love compromise and the word of G-d is uncompromising. Some time ago when the moderates turned Hellenist, the extremists slaughtered them. We call that Chanukah.

Deal with it, Sultan Knish. The Hellenistic slaughter is a kelipah of Chanukah. Chanukah celebrates the transformation of darkness into brilliance, אתהפכא חשוכא לנהורא.

Peaceful Potion

י' באדר תשס"ז

Tonight I will blend the magickal ink I will use in petition spells to be under the influence of peace. Peace implies comprehensive balance and hishtavut.

After sundown, it will be "Thursday", according to the Hebrew calendar. Thursday is under the influence of the vowel shurek, the Hebrew archetype Aaron and the Celtic archetype Lugh.

Shurek [1] corresponds to the sefirah Yesod, the vessel of peace. Aaron, as a priestly archetype of peace, corresponds to the sefirah Hod. Hod corresponds to the Temple and to the "power of the soul which causes negative phenomena to disappear while simultaneously causing positive phenomena to appear."

As I've written previously regarding Lugh and the 37th chanukah light, the specifically Welsh-Celtic name of Lugh is Lleu Llaw Gyffes, Lleu Strong Hand, where the name is etymologically derived from a proto-Celtic compound conveying the meaning "flowing vigor" and "flight, flying, soaring". This latter meaning of Lleu Llaw Gyffes links back to the function of Aaron, who kindles the lights of the Temple menorah and causes them to ascend.

With respect to the ritual hour, the calculations:

sunset tonight 5:40 pm
sunrise tomorrow 6:24 am

total minutes of night = (60 X 6) + (60 - 40) + (60 X 6) + 24 = 764

minutes per night hour = 764/12 = 63.6
*rounding to 64 and subtracting 1 minute every 3rd calculation to adjust for fraction:

hour 1 = 5:40 pm to 6:44 - sun
hour 2 = 6:44 to 7:48 - venus
hour 3 = 7:48 to 8:51* - mercury
hour 4 = 8:51 to 9:55 - moon
hour 5 = 9:55 to 10:59 - saturn
hour 6 = 10:59 to 12:02* am - jupiter
hour 7 = 12:02 to 1:06 - mars
hour 8 = 1:06 to 2:10 - sun
hour 9 = 2:10 to 3:13* - venus
hour 10 = 3:13 to 4:17 - mercury
hour 11 = 4:17 to 5:21 - moon
hour 12 = 5:21 to 6:24* - saturn
sunrises at 6:24 am

Among Jupiter's influences is peace. Consequently, I will blend my magickal ink during the sixth night hour tonight. The sixth night hour was also the favorable time to perform the Simple Moses Spell. It may be that the sixth night hour is a personal power time for me. So mote it be.

magickal ink recipe:

small vial of black ink
1 pinch name incense, undissolved
1 drop name incense infusion, steeped and dissolved in alcohol**
1 drop dragon's breath oil
1 drop sandalwood oil

While most ink recipes call for the resins to be steeped and dissolved in alcohol, I'm choosing to also add a small undissolved chunk into the ink as well. The dissolved portion will blend into the ink, while the undissolved portion will form a "foundation" within the ink. It will also be symbolic of being both in (immanent) and out (transcendent) of the world simultaneously - in velt ouis velt.

**70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol used in actual preparation of infusion.

Pentacle, Time & Geulah

The number eight figures significantly in Jewish tradition. On the eighth day, a baby boy is circumcized. The eight days of Chanukah transform darkness to light. Eight, the value of the letter chet (ח), is associated with the soul of mashiach and messianic consciousness.

Interestingly, the witch's pentacle is also associated with the number eight:

The pentagram is actually the geometric design depicting how the planet Venus moves in the heavens, and it is from this design that they believe the people of the Euphrates-Tigris region drew the first pentagram 8000 years ago. The pentacle is reflective of Venus' pattern in the sky from our point of view and the circular motion of Venus around the sun.

If we chart Venus synodic orbital time in the zodiac, we find she moves through 5 positions as the Morning Star, which takes exactly 8 years plus 1 day [1] - and forms the design of the pentacle in the vault of the heavens. [2, quote]

In Jewish kabbalah, the planet Venus planet corresponds with both the power to actualize potential and the archetype of Moshe Rabbeinu, the first and the final redeemer.

Taking all these ideas together, we can see within the pentacle symbolism the mystical dynamic - from 8 (assiyah) to 8000 (atzilut) - of brit milah, transformation, messianic consciousness and geulah.

Chanukah & The Secret Of The Unhewn Dolmen

This Friday evening the eighth (ח) Chanukah light was kindled. At sundown, in both the Celtic and Jewish timekeeping, Friday evening became the day of Shabbat.

Honoring this shabbat, many over the world kindled eight lights for Chanukah, completing the 36 lights of the entire period. Also honoring this shabbat is the Celtic day of the Unhewn Dolmen, a day set apart from any month in Celtic timekeeping, marking the sacred "space in time" which is a tara'a-gate (ח) into the mysteries of God-consciousness. In the kavanah of hitkalelut, I kindled a black candle, the 37th light, ritually prepared for this glorious event which includes both sacred Holy Days, the eighth day of Chanukah and the Unhewn Dolmen, joined together in the mystery of Shabbat.

I am a wind on deep waters and a shining tear of the sea,
Who but I knows the secret of the Unhewn Dolmen?
lines from an ancient Celtic poem, The Song of Amergin

שבת שלום

Shabbat Shalom.
Blessed is the Glorious Name, Her Kingdom stands forever and ever. Amen.
So mote it be.

The 37th Chanukah Light

Later this week, December 21, 2006 (Rosh Chodesh Tevet 5767) marks the winter solstice, known among witches as the lesser sabbat, Yule. Spiritually, Yule corresponds to the "dark night of the soul", which in Jewish kabbalah corresponds to an experience of the chalal hapanui as a trial in the course of prophetic development.

This year, the winter solstice marking the darkest astrological night of the year is also the night of the 7th Chanukah candle. Falling on Thursday, the Hebrew and Celtic archetypes corresponding to the winter solstice of 5767 are Aaron and Lugh, respectively.

Aaron is the kohen gadol who kindles the lights of the menorah in the Temple and causes those lights to ascend.

In the Celtic myth, The Coming Of Lugh, Lugh is given the sword-scepter of Light by the one who rules the endless sea. As one is a silent aleph (א), so too are the letters "gh" at the end of Lugh silent. Pronounced "Loo", similarly to the Divine Name [1] Hoo (הוא), the silence of the Gaelic-Celtic "gh" of Lugh corresponds to the aleph of Hoo. Consequently, the phonetic transliteration of Lugh into Hebrew letters is Lua (לוא).

Lua (לוא) has a gematria of 37, making it the im hakolel of lamed-vav (לו) , where lamed-vav represents the 36 total lights lit over the 8 days of Chanukah (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8), the lamedvav tzaddkim and the concept of hitkalelut.

In Jewish kabbalah, it is taught that the mashiach will arise from one of the 36 lamedvav tzaddikim in existence. Consequently, the gematria of 37, and thus the name Lua, corresponds to the elevation of a lamedvavnik to the "next level"; that is, to become the catalyst of messianic consciousness using the power of "reverse vision", changing "not" (the translation of Lua) into "not not".

The specifically Welsh-Celtic name of Lugh is Lleu Llaw Gyffes, Lleu Strong Hand, where the name is etymologically derived from a proto-Celtic compound conveying the meaning "flowing vigor" and "flight, flying, soaring". This latter meaning of Lleu Llaw Gyffes links back to the function of Aaron, who kindles the lights of the Temple menorah and causes them to ascend.

Blessed Be, Amen.

Instruments Of Divine Experience

Chatzot Of The Year, 29 Kislev 5767
Erev Rosh Chodesh Tevet, 5th Chanukah candle
new moon in Sagittarius Wednesday morning, 8:01 a.m. U.S. CST

According to Sefer Yetzirah, Wednesday is ruled by the planet Venus. The Hebrew and Celtic archetypes corresponding to Venus are Moshe and Rhiannon, respectively.

Moshe is an archetype of messianic consciousness whose name means "drawing out". In Celtic mysticism, Rhiannon is an archetype of the "great mother" whose name means "great queen".

Transliterated phonetically into Hebrew letters, Rhiannon רי ענן suggests the concepts of "clarifying and consciously experiencing" (ר) the concentration of something "infinite within the finite" (י) of a cloud (ענן), where the cloud represents the manifestion of the yud (י) of Hashem's Name. Taken together with the name of Moshe, the two archetypes (masculine and feminine side by side) correspond to the ability to clarify, experience (Rhiannon) and draw out (Moshe) the concentration of something "infinite within the finite" to reveal that concealed within a cloud (of consciousness). In other words, together Rhiannon and Moshe are instruments enabling revelation and experience of the Divine Glory.

What is the function of "the cloud" contained within the name of Rhiannon?

Rabbi Efrayim of Lunshitz, author of the Kli Yakar commentary, explains:

"The cloud covered the Tent of Appointment, and the Glory of God filled the cloud" (Shemot 40:34) - from this it appears that the Glory of God is not the cloud, but rather the fire and the light, i.e. the Glory of God was seen from within the cloud; were it not for the cloud, it would have been impossible to gaze upon it, for man cannot gaze into the light of the sun, kal va-chomer he cannot look at the brilliance of His Presence. Therefore the holy light was always seen from within the cloud ...

Divine Feminine, Druidry & Chanukah

In follow up to my post on the Oak Of Asherah where I wrote:

The goddess archetype Asherah is associated with the oak tree ... Some of the meanings of the shoresh (root) אלה include: master, combine elements for control, G-d who combines all natural force ... the gematria of the physical oak tree אלון in reality is 87. This value is the gematria of Elohim אלהים plus 1 (im hakolel).

One could posit that the "oak tree" symbolizes the "place"where "complete unity of multiplicity" may be actualized in nature. This "feminine" actualization would be a powerful transcendental yet simultaneously immanent "feminine force" to be reckoned with, a unified field even - a unification of all physical forces of nature - on par with Havayah.

and also in follow up to my post about my dream this morning where I was initiated as Celtic-Jewish hybrid Druid priestess, I note two related ideas. First, chanukah is coming up later this week. With respect to both chanukah and the concept of "initiation", Dave @ Balashon writes on the etymology of the word chanukah חנוכה:

This article by Prof. Stefan Reif shows how the basic meaning of the root חנך is "to begin, initiate". He writes that the places where the verb חנך is used in regards to the Mishkan or Beit HaMikdash (Bamidbar 7:10, Divrei HaYamim II 7:5-9) a good translation would be "initation" or "starting upon their course of beneficial service". ...

Rashi on Bereshit 14:14 writes that "the word חנך signifies introducing a person or a thing, for the first time, to some particular occupation in which it is intended that he should remain".

Second, on the etymology of the word Druid:

Druid comes to English from Latin druides (pronounced /dru'i.des/), which is the same as the term used by Ancient Greek writers, the first to discuss the Celts: Δρυίδης[3] (Druides), associated by folk etymology with drus (δρύς, pronounced /drys/ meaning "oak tree") and -ides (-ιδης meaning "the son of" as per Aristides). The Latin and Greek terms trace via Proto-Celtic *druwid (also reconstructed as *druwis and *druwids) to the Proto-Indo-European roots *deru- and *weid-.
*deru-[1] is reconstructed as meaning "to be firm, solid, steadfast".

The defining "Druidic" characteristics of firm and steadfast were evident in another recent dream, Key To The Temple, and also discussed here, Binyamin & The Dark Feminine.

Taking all this together, we can see that all the ideas of:

  1. being initiated as a Celtic-Jewish Druid priestess
  2. unifying the Divine Feminine into a configuration on par with Havayah
  3. building the Mishkan and/or Beit HaMikdash
  4. Chanukah as a time of mystical initiation
are all intimately related.
